Home History The Road To The Island

The way in which people were led in the Island PDF Print E-mail

In Spinalonga there were some residents who were not patients. Some of them were there, as they say, victims of personal or political differences, following a complaint that they were lepers and related corrupt doctors who diagnosed disease (although in this case, there's a viewpoint, that inmates relied on such grounds, they were trying to avoid the stigma of the leper, the same, and their families). Others were sent to Spinalonga and only on suspicion that they might have leprosy, especially if the family had a history of the disease. The were above all, people that didn't not want in any way to be away from their loved ones. During the separation from their loved ones was dramatic and tragic moments . There was a story of a girl, unable to overcome that separatio from her lover, and she injected herself, with the blood of her husband to become infected and forced  to Spinalonga. As it happened ... She does not, however fell ill, although her husband died in her arms. As most of the children born in Spinalonga didn't become ill, many of which were removed from their families to prevent illness (although marriages between Hansen formally banned because of illness, this has not prevented many of them to forge links - "illegal" ) and transferred to a special kindergarten in Athens. Physical contact with patients and healthy subjects (ie, staff and visitors) is strictly prohibited, while in their financial transactions, the money spent must be put in a special oven for disinfection. The discharge could be obtained only if it came out three consecutive negative tests required, within one year.
