In 1948, in America discovered the first drug to treat leprosy and eventually empties Spinalonga up in 1957 and left the latter patients, when it finaly closed. The remaining Lepers were not cured yet, they were moved to Leprosarium in the "Santa Barbara" Egaleo (or "infectious diseases", as it was called), between them and Epaminondas Remoundakis. Some patients, even cured, faced with great prejudice, and not without foundation-their return to the living environment before entering the Spinalonga, because of the stigma brought to fear of social rejection. The only one who said that stubbornly refused to leave the island, was a lyre player from Rethymnon, Antonis Papadakis or 'kareklas', which although was not patient had decided to live in Spinalonga with lepers. He still lives on the island, eating weeds and lizards, and playing the lyre, until the authorities brought him back to culture in violence , although he preferred the isolation from the world and expressed only through his music (his case recorded in the short film of 1968 «Letzte Worte» [«Last word '] of Werner Herzog). As was said, had gone mad ... (According to another version, however, the 'kareklas' in this film impersonating a patient who was playing the lyre).
