Today, after years of neglect, Spinalonga is identified as an archaeological site and monument and is visited by tourists during the summer, by boat. Spinalonga became more well known abroad, where in 2001 the British writer Victoria Hislop, learning by chance  the history of Spinalonga, shocked and she wrote the novel "The Island" which was translated into several languages and was transferred to Greek TV as very famous television series. In 1958, Lila Kourkoulakou, he directed,an  innovative film for its time,  "The Island of Silence, " starring Orestis Makris, Sgouridou Nina, George and John Kampanelis Sparidae. The film, which scenes were shot and sites of Spinalonga, the occasion was transferred from the island and the last patient had left there.
